Europe's population is expanding but also growing older
Europe's Ageing Population
EU report reveals 'population timebomb' imminent
Europe is getting older and its inhabitants are living longer, which could result in a greater strain on pensions and public services in future, according to recent EU stastics.
A report released this week has revealed that deaths are expected to outnumber births in the European Union from 2015, when migration will become the only source of population growth.
Forecasts show that many more people will live longer, with numbers of those aged 80 or over almost tripling in number from 22 million now to 61 million in 2060.
This has prompted concerns over healthcare and pensions in future. As the population ages, it's been predicted that there will be two workers for every retiree in 2060, instead of four at present.
The EU is encouraging governments to prepare for this 'population timebomb' and some are tackling the problem by encouraging people to work longer, abolishing rules that allow some professionals to retire in their 50s.
Britain is expected to overtake Germany and France in 2060 to become Europe's most populous state, with a population increase of 25% to 77 million.
France will grow to 72 million, but may not be aged as the rest of us as it currently enjoys Europe's highest birth rate.
