POPULATION
- Florida is the fourth most populous state in North America with 16 million residents.
- There has been a 23 per cent increase in the population since 1990.
- Only 49,200 of Floridians are native Americans, 0.3 per cent of the state’s entire population.
- More than a quarter of the population lives south of Alligator Alley (nickname for the I75) which crosses the state from Miami to the Everglades.
- The most populous metropolitan area is around Miami–Fort Lauderdale with a population of 3,192,582, although Jacksonville is the largest city in terms of population.
- Florida has a healthy multicultural society, particularly in Miami, which enjoys a strong Afro-Caribbean and Cuban presence.
GEOGRAPHY
- The state capital is Tallahassee.
- Florida covers 58,560 square miles and is the 22nd largest state in the country.
- The coastline stretches for 1,197 miles, with 1,100 miles of beaches.
- There are 67 counties in Florida.
- Florida has two Intracoastal Waterways: the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway runs along the east coast, while the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway runs along the west coast.
CLIMATE
- Between December and May temperatures average 15°c to 24°c
- Winter rainfall averages a mere 51.05mm.
- The summer months in Florida are extremely hot and humid; June is the wettest month with an average rainfall of 237mm.
ECONOMY
- Florida is the fourth largest economy in the US, with tourism being the state’s largest industry generating $57 billion a year.
- The median income per household was $38,972 in 2003 according to the US Census Bureau.
- Florida’s unemployment figures in May 2005 were 4.0 per cent, lower than the national average of 5.0 per cent.
- Florida has been quick to rebound from hurricane damage of recent years, causing upward revisions to the projected economic growth.
