Almost half of British workers have invested in property as an alternative to a conventional pension according to new research by employee benefits provider BC&E Benefit Schemes.
Some 44% of workers admitted that they are putting their pennies in property rather than a pension scheme, with the most common reason being that buyers wanted to exercise more control over their investment. Around 12% of those choosing to invest property said they did so because they did not trust pensions.
French property is particularly popular with these kinds of buyers because of the steady nature of the market across the channel. A more cautious attitude on the part of mortgage lenders in France has meant that dramatic price fluctuations are rare and investors are likely to see steady returns, with less risk than in the UK.
