Kalymnos Airport Opens

airportFly direct to Kalymnos airport from Athens.

Good news! Kalymnos now has its own airport… but it’s been a long time coming. First proposed back in 1987, the runway was actually built in 1991, but the project came to halt after running out of money.

But late last summer Kalymnos finally got the state-of-the-art airport that it has been waiting for so long. The island had a big party to celebrate the opening – 3,000 of its 16,000 inhabitants turned up to witness the maiden flight, with fireworks, live music and dancing. Wish we’d been there!

At the moment the airport serves only domestic flights, with Olympic Airlines offering direct daily flights from Athens. And it’s proving so popular, you need to book well ahead if you want your next trip to the ‘sponge-divers’ island to be by air. We’ve had some good reports from readers on the charms of Kalymnos… if you love diving or want to learn more about the sport, it’s the right place to visit.
