Road-trip Radio Launches in New Zealand

The great New Zealand road trip will never be the same again, with the introduction of Tourism Radio, a new station offering travellers their very own virtual on-board tour guide, as well as all-round Kiwi entertainment. A similar service will be offered in Australia too. nz_road_tripThe new personalised radio station, launched at the end of last year, uses GPS technology to tailor radio programming to the vehicle’s location. An 'IntelliPoint' system draws the driver's attention to prominent landmarks and highlights as the vehicle approaches them, making sure the tourist doesn't miss any key attractions.

Several New Zealand rental car companies are now offering the service, which provides information on 1600 points of interest, and shows based on Kiwi culture and music, with more than 80 hours of programming in total. Content includes everything from '20 questions', to 'ask a local', with an adventure show and pointers on Kiwi slang to boot. Listeners can simply tune in via the car radio.

The company’s New Zealand/Australia managing director, Hayden Braddock, says the content has been written to capture the essence of the country using common phrases and Kiwi voices for an authentic listening experience.

"Tourism Radio is a fantastic way for tourists to get a feeling for what New Zealand is all about. It's like having 10 locals in the car with you, all pointing out their favourite spots and chipping in their two cents worth," he said.

The station is available through selected rental companies including Jucy Rentals, Go Rentals, Kiwi Campers, Kiwi Autohomes, Spaceships, and Pegasus Rentals, with more companies expected to come on board during 2009.
